That's a big Twinkie

If you follow me on Twitter you may (or not) have noticed me tweet about the maker of Twinkie’s, Hostess, has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US.

I’m sure we’ve all heard of Twinkies at some point in our lives, yet you may not have realised how much of a culture they have created, there’s even a legal defence named after the sugary treat (popularised by the trial of defendant Dan White for the murders of San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk and mayor George Moscone).

Twinkie are referenced in some of my favourite ever movies (and TV shows) So I thought I’d share some of them here!

Wall-E

The survival of both the Twinkie and the cockroach perpetuates the urban myth that even should the world end, both will survive indefinitely.

Wall-e Twinkie

Die Hard

Convenience Store Clerk: [Powell with an armload of Twinkies] I thought you guys just ate doughnuts.

Sergeant Al Powell: Heh. They’re for my wife.

Convenience Store Clerk: [sarcastically] Yeah.

Sergeant Al Powell: She’s pregnant.

Convenience Store Clerk: Yeah.

Sergeant Al Powell: Bag it.

Convenience Store Clerk: Big time.

Even Bruce got in on the action, claiming that a moment of pain was due to eating “a thousand-year-old Twinkie”!

Zombieland

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

From the Inca Mummy Girl episode:

XANDER: And this is called a snack food. (holds up a Twinkie)

Ampata: Snack food?

XANDER: Yeah. It’s a delicious, spongy, golden cake stuffed with a delightful creamy, white substance of goodness. And here’s how you eat it. (stuffs it whole into his mouth) Mm-hm.

Ampata: Oh, but now I cannot try it.

XANDER: (with a full mouth) That’s why you bring two.

Ampata: Oh! Here goes!

XANDER: (mouth still full) Good, huh? And the exciting part is that they have no ingredients that a human can pronounce. So it doesn’t leave you with that heavy… food feeling in your stomach.

Ampata: (mouth full) You are strange.

XANDER: Girls always tell me that. Right before they run away.

Ampata: I like it!

XANDER: I like you like it! Please, don’t learn from my English.

Ghostbusters

Some of the best use of props and perfect comedy timing make this one of the greatest Twinkie related references ever.

Twinkie’s are more than just a sugary snack, they are an American icon in their own right.

What’s your favourite Twinkie moment?
